CHAPTER 6

ust as Yolanda and Quinn were about to close the yummery that Saturday evening, a man rushed inside. “I have to get a dozen macarons for my wife or I’m a dead man,” he said. “I’m glad I got here before you closed.”

Yolanda nodded. “Well, we’re about to close and I’ll have to go to the kitchen to get them. What flavor or flavors would you like?”

His eyes were studying the floor. “Whatever you have on hand, miss. I know she just loves anything sugary.”

“Quinn, you can go if you like, I’ve got this.”

Quinn stood near the door and stared at the man. “No, I’m in no rush tonight. I’ve got all the time in the world.” He pointedly stared at the man wearing a hooded Forest Mountain jacket, camouflage pants and hiking boots. “I also recommend the chocolate macarons.”

The stranger nodded. “Okay, I’ll take the chocolate macarons.”

Yolanda disappeared behind the curtain and Quinn had edged over a little closer to the man, still maintaining his observant stance and looking outside. “Your wife ever tried any of the coffee cakes?”

The man shook his head. “Um, no, can’t say if she has or not. She saw this place on that Best Bakeries show and you know how it is with women – always wanting the best.”

Quinn smiled. “Most of them are like that. Your wife is right, she’ll be getting the best when she bites into a macaron from our yummery. The pastry chef we hired was trained in Paris. And of course, Yolanda also makes them.”

Yolanda hurried out holding a pink box with the signature pink, green and yellow ribbon. “We have a half dozen chocolate and the other six are raspberry chocolate.” She set the box gently on the counter next to the cash register.

“I’m sure the wife’ll love ‘em. It’s our anniversary tonight, you know.” He reached into his jacket to pull out his wallet. There was a pause. He pulled his hand out, removing a glove. His brow wrinkled. “I thought...” The man reached into his left side pocket. Yolanda and Quinn watched the man yank out a large flashlight from his jacket. He lunged for Quinn, the beam highlighting the Beverage Bar manager’s startled face. As Quinn saw the shorter man coming towards him, he stepped away, barely avoiding being hit with the heavy object. He almost fell but steadied himself.

Yolanda screamed and rushed back behind the cloth barrier, wishing it was a locked steel door. The man clattered over the glass countertop, knocking an empty lidded sample tray off the counter. The glass tray shattered into thousands of pieces and the clean display cases were smeared with mud.

Yolanda shrieked and locked herself in her office. Her heart was racing and she reached for her desk phone to call 911. Just as she picked up the receiver there was a very loud banging noise on the door. She hit the speakerphone button and scrambled to the other side of the office, grabbing the guest chair, shoving it beneath the doorknob.
